"A positive learning environment never happens by accident – it is the direct result of actions taken by instructors who understand adult learners."
Good teachers know the difference between pedagogy and andragogy and use tools of engagement to assist in creating a positive learning environment. In my day to day work, I teach a variety of skill levels, some come in with very basic computer knowledge while others already have a vast understanding that is greater than mine and it is up to me to determine that and choose the best methods based on those individuals. Some require what one might call as 'hand-holding' or tell them exactly what they need to know, a more pedagogical approach. While other students, like the professional engineers and those with more computer experience want to explore and figure things out on their own and simply need a 'coach' to guide them through lessons.
Instructors must also have "a willingness and commitment to communicate with adult students in a way that fosters open exchanges."
